Economic Impacts
The total cost of the Black Saturday Bushfires was estimated at around $4.4 Billion. The Black Saturday Bushfires is the 8th deadliest bushfire event documented in the world. $645 million was placed on the 173 lives lost using an accepted method the government uses to value lives, but didn't cover those who were injured. Also from the $4.4 billion were the agricultural losses that were destroyed in the fires, and the continuing impacts on agriculture in the seasons afterwards. Buildings and power-lines that were destroyed in the fires, as well as other material would have needed replacing after the occurrence of the fires. This would have been the major part out of the cost. Clearing the area of burnt debris would also have taken time and an amount of money to accomplish. |
